TAKE ACTION Tell Lawmakers: Making Guns More Accessible is a Mistake

We all deserve the freedom to live in safe, welcoming communities. Going to school, shopping for groceries, working a shift, or taking your kids to the playground should not be a death sentence.

We lose too many North Carolinians to the scourge of gun violence every year. On average, 1,470 North Carolinians die by guns every year, or one North Carolinian every six hours.

Gun violence disproportionately and overwhelmingly harms the Black community in North Carolina. Black North Carolinians make up 22% of the state’s population, but 67% of its gun homicide deaths.

Easy access to guns puts women at risk. Women in the United States are 21 times more likely to be killed with a gun than women in other high-income countries. Domestic violence victims are five times more likely to be killed when their abuser has access to a gun.

Let lawmakers know that enough is enough. Removing the pistol permit requirement only makes us less safe. They must uphold Governor Cooper’s veto to protect our kids and our communities.

On average, 1,470 North Carolinians die by guns every year, or one North Carolinian every six hours.  Removing common-sense gun restrictions will only increase the pain and trauma in our communities.

A vast majority of North Carolinians, including gun owners, support common-sense gun safety laws. 89% of all NC voters, and 87% of NC gun owners, support requiring background checks for all gun purchases, according to a 2022 poll.

As a North Carolina resident and voter, I implore you to uphold Governor Cooper’s veto to keep our kids and our communities safe.
